The Smyth County Humane Society (SCHS) is a non-shelter organization that advocates for the prevention of cruelty to animals through education and public relations activities; effects pet population control through spay/neuter clinics with funding assistance for low-income families as well as  TNR / Community Cat support; works with rescue groups to save the lives of abandoned or homeless pets;  and works closely with our sister organization, Smyth Animal Rescue & Resource Center, and serves as liaison to the Smyth County Public Animal Shelter.

1,346 spay & neuter surgeries scheduled and/or subsidized in 2023 - more than ever!

Excited to expand our community cat support & TNR to further reduce overpopulation and to vaccinate for healthier colonies throughout the county.

1900 hours donated to projects in 2023 - averaging 37 hours per week to schedule spay/neuter appointments, help with the spay/neuter van, take calls, keep the pet food pantries stocked, and so much more....

1,224  lives of companion animals saved at the Smyth County Public Animal Shelter due to adoption, reclaimed by owners, and joint rescue efforts. Live release rate of 85.6% - best ever in 2023!

32,000 pounds of pet food collected and distributed to 3 food pantries that would otherwise have none. Pet owners and community cat feeders are very appreciative.
